dark intentions

A disheveled nana Bella is what I expected to see after banging on her door early on a Sunday morning. Instead, Alex’s crazy, curly bedhead answers the door. “What are you doing? Don’t you ever sleep?”

“Yeah, it’s 8am. Where’s Nana?”

“Not here, duh. She’s on a romantic getaway with her boo.” He slow blinks as if he’s about to fall asleep standing up.

“Boo? Who talks like that?” I walk through the door tired of waiting to be invited in. “You might be able to help me then.”

“Ellie, my head hurts, my body hurts. I don’t know if I can think straight right now.”

“Try. You love books. Have you read any of nana Bella’s spell books?”

He scratches his head and cautiously answers, “Yeah.”

I realize I’m wringing my hands when I catch him staring. “Look, Alex, I need to find out who’s after me and I’m thinking if you know of a spell that can locate or a spell to take me to that person, maybe in spirit form. Maybe. I can negotiate a truce or something.”

He shakes his head and chuckles, “What? No. That’s crazy dangerous. No can do. Bye, bye, come again.” He goes behind me and tries to usher me out.

I turn around and face him. “I’m serious, Alex.”

“Me too, and I’m seriously saying that’s dangerous.”

Ugh, rub between my eyes to ease the oncoming headache before I say, “Alex, please. I need to do something. Someone or something wants I don’t know what and too many people are getting hurt because of it. Think. Please.”

He clasps his hands, puts them on his head, raises his face to the ceiling. “Arrrrgghhh. I need some thinking juice first.”

Yes! “Coffee. I’ll make you coffee.”

“No. Yuck. Chai tea latte, hot.”

“Really? Okay, fine.” I rush to the kitchen and grab the chai tea latte mix and milk and put half and half each in a coffee mug. I microwave the mixture and take it out with oven mitts.

He’s sitting on the couch as if he’s about to go back to sleep. I put his latte on the nana’s USMC coaster. “Here. It’s hot.”

Alex grabs for the mug. “Holy hot latte, batman. Where are the coffee sleeves when you need them?”

I can’t believe my cousin is such a dork.

He grabs the oven mit from me and wraps it around his mug. He daintily puts it to his lips and squinces as the hot liquid hits his mouth. “Ahh, hot. But good. Okay, let me think.” Alex takes a few more careful sips and starts to pace. “You want to find and confront an unknown bad guy without being killed or caught. Hhmm.”

He walks over to nana Bella’s book shelf. He looks at me and says, “Don’t tell.”

“Don’t tell about what?”

He puts his forefinger to his lips and gestures that whatever he’s about to do is a secret.

I’m exasperated, “Yeah, Okay.”

He turns his body to face the book shelf blocking my view. I hear a spring release and the whole section of the wall behind the book shelf opens as a door revealing a room the size of a walk-in closet.
